CERTIFICATE IN PRESERVATION SKILLS & TECHNOLOGY

Offered by The Preservation Education Institute, Historic Windsor, Inc., and the Division of Architecture and Art, Norwich University.

This is an optional program of continuing education for building professionals in the field of historic preservation. It leads to a certification of the knowledge and skills obtained by completion of eight required workshops, five electives, and a community service preservation project. The following information summarizes the curriculum, admission requirement and fees. We hope to offer three to five required courses each year and an equal number of electives. The Certificate Program can be completed in as little as two years and as long as five years. All courses will be graded pass/fail. Participants must attend all sessions of each workshop in order to receive a passing grade. The Program is not offered for college credit at this time.

Enrollment:  The Certificate Program is designed for building professionals including tradespeople, contractors, architects, building trades teachers, engineers, and specification writers.  Students enrolled in vocational or academic programs may enroll as well.  Homeowners or interested lay people will be admitted if they can demonstrate their knowledge and skills of construction.  Normally a minimum of one to two years professional experience or education is required for admission. To enroll, request an application form from HWI's office and mail it with your registration fee (renewable annually for each year enrolled in the program) of $50. The registration fee includes membership in Historic Windsor, Inc., thereby entitling the participant to a reduced tuition rate. Upon request, the curriculum narrative will be mailed to a prospective participant.

Community Service Project:  Philanthropy is the backbone of historic preservation, so before the certificate is awarded, each participant must complete a modest project (less than 40 hours to complete) for a non-profit or government-owned building. The project will be undertaken with the supervision of a mentor approved by the Preservation Education Institute.
